Bethel is a town in Pitt County, North Carolina, United States. It is located in the eastern part of the state, near Greenville. The population of Bethel was 1,657 at the 2010 census. The town was settled in the late 1700s and was originally named Swift Creek. In 1814, the town was renamed Bethel, which means "house of God" in Hebrew. Bethel is home to several historic sites, including the Red Banks Primitive Baptist Church and Cemetery, which dates back to the early 1800s. The town is also known for its annual Peanut Festival, which celebrates the local peanut industry. Bethel is located close to several major highways, including US Route 64 and Interstate 95, making it easily accessible from other areas of North Carolina.
